Indio was a small white dog who came from the desert and spent the rest of his life in the snow, watching mountains he never quite got used to.

This is his story, in his own words. He tells it plainly — the arriving, the settling in, the six cats he never asked for, the long slow work of getting old. He tells the end of it too, because that part belongs to the story as much as any other part does.

It is a short book. It was written for anyone who has loved an animal all the way through, and for anyone who is doing that now and needs to know they are not the only one.

The story didn't end with the book

The cats are still here. So is the snow, and the path, and the mountains. There is a new dog, too, when the time is right.

Stacey M. M. Shirra lives in Colorado with six cats and the mountains that Indio watched. She wrote this book after he died, because she wanted to remember it exactly, and because the version of grief she found in most places did not sound like hers.
